- First get a copy
of the USPC Quiz Rulebook
from the US Pony Club website. You need to know that there are 5
possible phases of quiz, and what the rules for each phase are. The
phases are
- Written Test
- Classroom
- Megaroom
- Stations and
- Barn
|
- Make sure you know what ALL the suggested reading materials
are for your
rating level. Have you downloaded the book list? DO THAT! It's at the
US Pony Club web site, under Forms, then under Quiz, then it's "Quiz Reference/Study List."
If you're feeling bold, get all the books shown for TWO LEVELS above
your current rating. (Think about it
-- you'll need them eventually anyway, AND you can ask for 15-point
questions in the classroom !) Your
club may have all these books in the club library, so check and see if
your club is hosting study sessions to get ready, and if not, maybe you
can organize them for your club or your team.

- Look at lots of other things too -- you wouldn't believe
how handy it
is to study the tack catalogs for that day when you get in Megaroom and
there's
all that strange equipment in there! Be sure you know what things are
called in
different catalogs and in the reference list books, since lots of times
there are different names for the same thing, like a Kimberwicke bit is
also called a Kimblewick in British publications. A full-cheek snaffle
here might just be a cheek bit in another list. If you've seen it
before though, you'll know what you're looking at and feel much more
confident.
- Don't forget to look at ALL THE OTHER RULEBOOKS, and read
up on those sports carefully.
Dollars to doughnuts there will be questions on foxhunting terms, polocrosse equipment,
vaulting moves, show jumping scores, games setup and much,
much more!

The Day of the Quiz
- Dress for success. If you have a club polo shirt, wear
that, with khakis or shorts. Don't forget you have to have correct
footware if there's a barn phase, so paddock boots are always a safe
choice.
- Put on your Pony Club pin before you take another breath.
Every phase will have someone checking for that, and you lose a point
if it's missing!
- Bring a handy snack along in case you get hungry and
brain-fried partway through. Peanut butter and jelly is a good choice,
since the jelly (high carbs) gives you a boost and the peanut butter
(complex carbs) gives you holding power to feel good later.
- Bring along a reference book to study, maybe a game or
another reading book in case there's a waiting period between phases.
- Remember to thank the organizers, they have run themselves
ragged to put all this together, and they're hoping you've learned a
lot and had a great time!
